This is the standard day-one Istanbul tour — the big four sites plus a Grand Bazaar stop — but with a licensed guide and without the group-bus logistics of the cheapest packaged versions. 8 hours, small group (maximum 10), designed for travellers who have one day for the historical peninsula and want to actually learn what they’re looking at rather than just tick boxes.
The route: 9 AM pickup at your hotel. Topkapı Palace first (opens 9 AM, we arrive before the cruise-ship groups at 10:30). Roughly 90 minutes in the palace — Imperial Treasury, Harem (optional additional ticket), and the upper terrace for the Bosphorus view from where the Sultans saw it. Then Hagia Sophia (60 minutes, covering both the Byzantine mosaics and the Ottoman minbar, muezzin’s loge and mihrab), then the Blue Mosque across Sultanahmet Square (30 minutes — note it’s a functioning mosque, timed around prayer).
Lunch: a traditional Turkish meal at a restaurant in the Sultanahmet quarter, included.
Afternoon: the Basilica Cistern (45 minutes — the underground columns and Medusa heads), then an hour in the Grand Bazaar with guidance on which sections are tourist traps and which are worth browsing. Optional last stop at the Spice Market depending on time.
Who this is for: first-time visitors with a tight schedule, cruise ship passengers, travellers who want real information rather than memorized scripts. If you want a Byzantine-only deep dive, see the Byzantine Relics tour. If you want to add a Bosphorus cruise to the day, the Two Continents combination covers cruise + land in one booking.
Practical: shoulders and knees covered; women need headscarves for the mosques (provided at entry). Comfortable shoes — 4–5 km walking, some uneven cobblestones.
The Full Day Istanbul Old City Tour is a great option for visitors who want to discover the most important historical sites of Istanbul in a single day while learning about the city’s fascinating past.
The historical heart of Istanbul and the starting point of the tour. Once the center of Byzantine and Ottoman life, Sultanahmet Square connects the city’s most iconic landmarks within walking distance and offers a perfect introduction to the Old City atmosphere.
Built in 537 AD by Emperor Justinian I, Hagia Sophia is one of the most significant monuments in world history. During the exterior visit, your guide will explain its architectural importance and its transformation from cathedral to mosque, museum, and mosque again — reflecting Istanbul’s rich cultural layers.
Officially known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, this 17th-century masterpiece is famous for its six minarets and stunning blue İznik tiles. Inside, visitors experience the harmony of Ottoman architecture, elegant domes, and peaceful ambiance.
The former social and sporting center of Byzantine Constantinople. Once hosting chariot races and imperial ceremonies, today it displays historic monuments such as the Obelisk of Theodosius, Serpent Column, and Walled Obelisk.
A relaxing lunch at a local restaurant offering traditional Turkish cuisine. Guests can enjoy authentic flavors and recharge before continuing the historical exploration.
The imperial residence of Ottoman sultans for more than 400 years. This vast palace complex includes grand courtyards, imperial chambers, treasury collections, and sacred relics, offering deep insight into Ottoman political power and royal life.
One of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world, featuring over 4,000 shops. From handmade carpets and ceramics to jewelry and leather goods, the Grand Bazaar provides a vibrant cultural and shopping experience — the perfect finale to your Istanbul Old City Tour.
