A full day inside Byzantine Istanbul

Before Istanbul was Istanbul, before it was Constantinople, this city was already the centre of the Eastern Mediterranean world. The Byzantine tour takes you to the sites that actually survived — not the famous few, but the mosaics, churches, cisterns and walls that most visitors walk past without noticing. About 8 hours, with a licensed guide who has a degree in Byzantine history or archaeology.

Start at the Hagia Sophia. The standard tourist version of Hagia Sophia is 20 minutes in the main hall. This tour spends 60–90 minutes covering what most guides skip: the 9th-century mosaics in the upper galleries with imperial portraits, the Viking-era runic inscriptions scratched by Varangian Guard soldiers, the marble door whose provenance is still debated among historians.

Next: the Chora Church (Kariye Camii). Far from the main tourist circuit, Chora holds the most complete collection of late-Byzantine mosaics and frescoes anywhere — 14th century, anticipating the Italian Renaissance by 200 years. Fewer than 5% of Istanbul visitors reach Chora. Then the Basilica Cistern and two lesser-known underground cisterns nearby, the Theodosian land walls (a walk along the best-preserved section), and the Hippodrome area with the Obelisk of Theodosius and the Serpentine Column.

Lunch is included — a traditional Ottoman-style meal at a restaurant in the Balat neighbourhood, the old Jewish and Greek quarter of the walled city.

Who this is for: travellers with a real interest in history, returning visitors who’ve done the standard sites, educated tourists who want depth rather than breadth. If you want the standard day-1 Old City coverage (Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapı), see the Full Day Old City Tour.

Practical: comfortable walking shoes (8 km on foot in total). Shoulders and knees covered for church and mosque visits. Small group (maximum 8) for the academic pace.
